Never give up, never surrender! Sorry, I know, wrong franchise. But if you were holding out hope that Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron might still achieve liftoff someday, despite being removed from active development last year—your hopes were founded, and your day may still come. Speaking on the Talking Pictures podcast (via IGN), Jenkins said, essentially, that with Wonder Woman 3 no longer happening, her schedule cleared for her to return to Lucasfilm, and to a galaxy far, far away.
“They have other directors who have been working,” Jenkins said, “but I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron. We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”
Rogue Squadron was announced in December 2020, which, for some context, is also when we first learned about Ahsoka. Since then, of course, we have gotten plenty of Star Wars series, and not a single Star Wars movie; the last one, alas, was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. It’s still not certain what the next Star Wars cinematic release will be: Jon Favreau is making The Mandalorian & Grogu; James Mangold is making an origins-of-the-Jedi movie; Dave Filoni is making a movie to connect all the post-Return of the Jedi plot threads; and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is continuing Rey’s story. And someday, in theory, there’ll be a Taika Waititi Star Wars.
Three dates are saved on Disney’s calendar for Star Wars films: May 22, 2026; December 18, 2026; and December 17, 2027.
